Question 1 - In your own words, describe how geologists infer Uluru and Kata Tjuta where formed?11/26/2014 Uluru and Kata Tjuta began formation approximately 550 million years ago. The process happened when sedimentary rocks that where pushed up by rocks from the Musgrave Province caused a Mountain Forming Event. The rocks have been weathered and eroded over centuries to form as they are now. The ribs were formed when some areas are weathered faster than others causing rib-like rock structures. Dips and holes are caused by years of heavy rainfall. Uluru is composed of something called arkose, a course-grained sandstone rich in the mineral feldspar. Kata Tjuta is a sedimentary rock called conglomerate. Uluru and Kata Tjuta were originally like the Himalayas and Alps height wise, however were worn significantly due to weathering. There are 2 types of ribs - old ribs and after new ribs which goes across the old ribs like somebody brushed the mountain. ( Take helicopter to see) . Also, small dome of Kata TJuta has ribs too and big domes dont't and formed as conglomerate ... Leave a Reply. |
